Performed in 1776 at Barter Theatre

Co. Aytch Memoirs of a Confederate Soldier

Picture
In 1986 I discovered the Book Co. Aytch by Sam R. Watkins and I turned it into a one-man play after receiving permission to do so from McMillan Publishing Company and the Watkins’ family. The play was first performed at The University of Southern Mississippi under the direction of R.B. Hill. I have since performed it across the country for professional theatres, University theatres, historical organizations, The National Park Service, Civil War Reenactments, and for a Watkins’ family reunion.

Roy P. Basler said in his introduction to the book, Co. Aytch, “Sam Watkins was a natural poet and philosopher.” Sam’s book shows the reader the war through the eyes of a Confederate private. Written 20 years after the war, the work first appeared as a series of articles for the “Columbia, Tennessee Herald” Soon after the series was completed these reports were published as a book. They are an honest account of one man’s experience in a bloody and brutal war.

Sam Watkins was born on June 26, 1839 in Columbia, Tennessee. Prior to the war he attended Jackson College at Columbia. During his life he was a farmer, storekeeper, soldier and brilliant writer. During the war he left his home and beloved Jenny to enlist in Company H of the First Tennessee Regiment. During the war he would fight in almost every major battle fought by the Army of Tennessee. At the beginning of the war there were 120 men in Company H. When Johnston surrendered in Greensboro, NC in 1865 Sam was one of seven men left alive to surrender. Following the war, Sam returned home to Columbia to marry Jenny and raise his family of “Little Confederates.” He died on July 20, 1901 at the age of 62.

The Play:

The production is set in a lecture hall in 1882. I play Sam Watkins who has been invited here to talk about his experiences in the war. I take the audience through the war from its beginning to surrender. There are two versions of my play. I can do an hour-long version performed without intermission or the complete one and a half hour version performed with a 10-minute intermission. The performance can be adapted to any playing space. I supply all costumes and properties. In the play I use a soundtrack written and performed by Bobby Horton. A technician accompanies me to run the sound, stage-manage and help supervise technical aspects of the production. Theatres where I perform will be required to supply a sound system for the production.

Cost:

My fee for the production is $600.00 plus expenses. Expenses include a travel fee figured at $.50 per mile and lodging for two, if we need to stay overnight. You are responsible for promotion of the production and all ticket sales.

QUOTES:

“Funk’s one-man play offers charm and comedy on top of a powerful message”

Birmingham News

“It was hard to remember that this was an actor and not the actual soldier because it was realistic and emotional”

The Kaleidoscope

“Your one-man show of Sam Watkins was wonderful.”

Lawrence Steeler, National Park Service

“Thank you for a superb performance.”

Mary Leb, Artistic Director, Carnegie Hall, Lewisburg, WVA
